Training Program

ASL Diagnostic and Evaluation Services (ASL-DES) is very aware of the increased demand for ASLPI services nationwide, as well as its current limited accessibility. As a result, ASL-DES is developing a comprehensive training and cyclical retraining program. Training components include focus on interview quality to ensure the highest proficiency level of each examinee is elicited, and inter- and intra-rating reliability. For many years, ASL-DES evaluators have conducted inter- and intra-rating reliability studies with other active ASLPI evaluators and have a reliability rate of 93%.

ASLPI proficiency results are used as a threshold for academic purposes (e.g., admissions, readiness for internship, graduation), hiring decisions, and other professional benchmarks. Given the high stakes of this evaluation, ASL-DES understands the importance of not only providing thorough training, but also for developing a certification process for prospective evaluators that is tied to clear rubrics, and establishing a supportive infrastructure for evaluators that works to ensure professionalism of its members, standardization of and adherance to policies, procedures and protocol, quality assurance, and reliability of results.

The development of this training program, refresher training, the certification process and the infrastructure is essential. ASL-DES is also connecting to the broader field of language proficiency evaluation to ensure the ASLPI is aligned and stays current with best practices.
