Diagnostic Assessment Tools

The ASL Assessment Checklist (2000) was adapted from the Signed Language Development Checklist, an instrument developed by Dr. Judith Mounty when she was a research scientist at Educational Testing Service, and also incorporates the work of other members of the Gallaudet community. A variant tool, the Classroom Observation Form (2005), was developed for collecting data in the classroom, and additional instruments have been developed since for conducting Diagnostic Assessments in other settings.

Availability of Tools:

Neither the ASL Assessment Checklist, nor its predecessor, the Signed Language Development Checklist, is available for purchase or dissemination at this time. Proper use of the instruments requires specialized knowledge and skills and formal training. However, on a case by case basis, it may be possible to make arrangements for researchers and other professionals to review the tools.
